New Teacher Survival Guide

That first year teaching is a daunting one.  It has been said that one should not underestimate the days you drive home in tears because of the sheer overwhelming intensity of your calling.

I have collected together a group of First Year Teacher Survival Guide Videos.  These are compliments of the Teaching Channel which I encourage to to click on  over and check out the fantastic goings on over there.

First off, let’s watch a new teacher go step by step through planning a day’s lesson. Here are some questions to consider as you watch:

  • Even if you don’t have a coach writing your lessons with you, what questions can you ask yourself as you plan to cover all the bases?

  • What routine do you use to reflect on each lesson?

  • What advice would you give Ms. Rubinetti to improve her pacing?

Next, what about the dread(da-da-da-dummm) Classroom Management! Eeek!

Watch as a new teacher uses 7 classroom management tips to change her classroom.  As you watch, here are some questions to consider:

  • How do students react when Ms. V redirects them with a whisper?

  • Do you see a difference when she tries positive narration?

  • What advice would you give Ms. V to continue improving her practice?

My final piece concerns differentiation in a classroom of diverse learners with diverse needs. How to engage the students is key.  Watch this short video with a new teacher’s first attempt at differentiation via some expert advice. Here are some questions to consider while you watch:

  • Why is assessment a key part of differentiation? What kinds of assessments could/should these be?

  • What aspects of your lesson can be tiered to meet students at their level?

  • What are simple ways you can start differentiating tomorrow? More difficult ways you can work at over the year?

If you enjoyed these videos and thought provoking ideas I highly encourage you to hop on over to the Teaching Channel.  I don’t think you’ll regret it!

Hello there! Looking through this post reminds me of my previous roommate! He was constantly kept preaching about this and how new teachers need more support and mentoring. I certainly will message this article to him. Fairly certain he’ll have a good read. Many thanks for sharing!
