What’s the definition of comedy? Banana. – Addison Anderson Flipped Lesson created by Laura Diaz

In our study of Genre we have been discussing Non-Fiction, Drama, and Realistic Fiction. In this Unit we will explore Comedy. What makes us giggle and guffaw? The inability to define comedy is its very appeal; it is defined by its defiance of definition.
A.Anderson riffs on the philosophy of Henri Bergson and Aristotle to elucidate how a definition draws borders while comedy breaks them down.
In this lesson we explore and try to answer the following questions:
> Are things funny if they’re true?
>What did Bergson argue comedy tends to target?
>Why is it funny when someone slips on a banana peel?
>Let’s say you figure out the actual definition and essential criteria of comedy and thus know whether anything qualifies as funny or not. Now explain why people laugh at what’s funny.
